Back Inversion Tables

This website looks at the reasons for inversion tables and some of the "best buys" to be found.

Back inversion tables are generally used in inversion table therapy where the body is inverted at an angle to the teeter_ep_550_inversion_tablehorizontal in order to take some of the effects of gravity away from compressing the spine and therefore allowing it to stretch it’s components.

The reason people do this is for natural pain relief as the pressure is reduced from around the nerves in the lower back. This is nothing new as people have been hanging upside with mechanical aids for thousands of years in an attempt to relieve lower back pain and avoid unecessary surgery!

If you look at pictures of the spine you will see the line of vertebrae and the discs that seperate them to allow movement and provide a shock absorption system. Poor posture, or a wrong movement, or over enthusiastic sports are all things that can contribute to the discs being compressed and causing lower back pain or sciatica.

In the middle of each disc is what best can be described as a jelly type liquid which can protrude out and the edges put pressure on the local nerves. If you use a back inversion table which secures your feet and legs, gentle inversion where the head goes lower than the feet, your own body weight effectively applies a mild traction to the spine which becomes slightly longer as there is more space between each of the vertebrae. This reduced pressure allows the discs to retract a little bit and in doing so, reduce the pressure on the nerves. That’s because these nerves leaves the spine through the spaces between the vertebrae – so the traction on the spine increases the space, reduces the pressure, relieves the nerve roots and discs – which means less back pain!

As always, we recommend seeking professional medical advice (from your doctor) before using inversion therapy equipment although this activity is made very safe nowadays by the very solid construction of the back inversion tables.
